At Downton Abbey, Vera comes to Bates with a hard expression and an even harder plan. She tells him to sit down, but he refuses, sensing that anything calm in this room is already lost. Bates tries to face her honestly, admitting that whatever went wrong between them was not all his fault, yet he cannot return to the life they had. Vera answers with cold certainty: she has tried living on her own, and she does not like it. Bates has money now, she reminds him, and together they could be comfortable. His refusal only deepens her bitterness.
