CBS’ "Young Sheldon", the prequel to the popular sitcom "The Big Bang Theory", launched in 2017, has been heavily criticised for contradicting and undermining its parent series, despite effectively being built upon its success. Initially, the shows had few connections; however, as The Big Bang Theory neared its end after 12 seasons, CBS tried to leverage its loyal viewer base to drive them towards its newer spin-off. Since 2019, Young Sheldon has continued to echo The Big Bang Theory, engaging some of the original cast for voice cameos. One major contradiction lies in the portrayal of George, Sheldon’s father. The original sitcom painted George as a negligent father, while Young Sheldon portrays him as a decent family man, a depiction they are sticking to in the fifth season, exacerbating this plot discrepancy and making Sheldon and Mary unreliable narrators about their family history. The show seems to be building towards George’s inevitable affair, as portrayed in The Big Bang Theory, but Young Sheldon’s spin that Mary is also having an affair is a new addition, further compromising the integrity of the original story.
